Many Faces Of The PoliceOpis:Originated from the new-wave scene that followed the punk explosion of the late 70's, The Police stood out of the pack mostly due to the fusion of reggae and punk that permeated their music. When you top that with an exquisite songwriting talent (although the three members of the band wrote songs, their bassist and lead singer Sting definitely had a knack to create timeless hits) and a level of execution that was way above the band with which they shared the scene, you have a band for the ages. Both the drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers had a long history in the English music scene as members of "old wave" groups such as Curved Air (Copeland), Dantalian's Chariot and Eric Burdon & The Animals (Summers), and that was evident in the exuberant performance of Copeland (who by then already created his own style) and in the clever work of Summers which, along with the unmistakable voice of Sting, made them a unique band. A band that influenced an infinite number of groups, and separated them from the batch of new-wave bands with more limited musical resources. In The Many Faces Of The Police we will explore the band's different paths, their lesser known projects, we will honor their songs and finally we will examine the scene that gave birth to their career. The trip starts with French guitarist Henry Padovani, who was one of the founding members of the trio, before being replaced by Andy Summers. Padovani was part of The Police from January to August 1977 and only recorded with the band the single Fall Out. Since Sting was not happy with Padovani's guitar technique, he asked Summers to join them to start playing as a quartet. Things still didn't' work so in the end, it was Stewart Copeland who ended up firing Padovani. In any case, the guitarist quickly found a new gig as part of The Electric Chairs (the punk group of the cross-dresser Wayne / Jayne County), which at that time was much more popular than The Police (they even opened for The Electric Chairs multiple times). In The Many Faces we can listen to the Electric Chairs with Big Black Widow and Bad In Bed, two of their greatest musical moments. Afterwards, Padovani embarked on a briefly project called The Mystere Five's and by 1981, Padovani have formed his own band The Flying Padovanis, and released their debut single Western Pasta / Vas Plus Haut, which is included in its enterity here in The Many Faces. After the The Police officially broke up in 1986, and while Sting embarked on a successful solo career, both Summers and Copeland remained also very active. Among Summers' many projects is an excellent album he recorded along British guitarist John Etheridge (formerly of Soft Machine and Wolf). From this project, in The Many Faces we feature the songs Broken Brains and Little Transgressions, both written by Summers. Also, in a style that strongly recalls The Police, Summers launched the Circa Zero project, which released their debut album in 2014. From that release, we can enjoy Levitation, Say Goodnight and Shoot Out The Stars, a true gem. For his part, Stewart Copeland was (among other things) a guest artist on the album Undressing Underwater by Rusty Anderson, currently, one of Paul McCartney guitar players. In The Many Faces we can listen to Copeland with Anderson on the song Catbox Beach, where Anderson demonstrates his love for The Shadows and Stewart showcases his personal style. Copeland also collaborated with Californian singer Jesca Hoop in its celebrated and avant-garde album Kismet. In The Many Faces we include them with the song Seed Of Wonder. To complete CD1 of The Many Faces we presente The Racketeers, a lesser-known project that includes two rock pioneers such as guitarists Wayne Kramer (MC5) and Brian James (founder of The Damned and The Lords Of The New Church). Together they released one album, in 2004, with a fantastic star guest-list that includes Duff McKagan, Clem Burke and of course Stewart Copeland.
